And don’t forget, those sacrificed Clues will trigger Aetherworks Marvel, gaining you an energy each time. If you have a creature worth copying — say, Mossborn Hydra — Springheart Nantuko is excellent to bestow. Inspiring Call isn’t an X-spell, but it’s both card draw and protection from non-exile effects that might otherwise destroy all your creatures with counters on them. If they do die, however, The Ozolith is happy to collect the counters and distribute them to another creature. If so, use whatever you like as each one will fit your deck comfortably with plenty of extra room.

A package is a group of cards that perform some function for your deck. With a 99-card deck and 23,000 cards to choose from, it can be daunting to build a deck. This is why I suggest we don’t focus on individual cards, rather on individual packages.

Then there’s Wickerfolk Thresher, which has a really nice Delirium attack trigger that lets you either put the top card of your library onto the battlefield if it’s a land or put it in your hand. At six mana, if you cast Disciple of Freyalise for no mana, that means you’ll have all your mana available to cast any of the spells from among your freshly drawn cards. Caged Sun for no mana means all your green-producing lands will immediately be able to be tapped for extra mana. Surrak and Goreclaw is an excellent card to deploy for free and then cast another creature spell to take advantage of its trigger to crash into the red zone. At five mana I’d consider Unnatural Growth, especially if I was running a fair number of creatures with trample. Ohran Frostfang offers more card drawing, and making blocking awkward for your opponents.

You can mix and match the boxes and lids, but I don’t think it looks good. This was before the newer versions that have the commander windows. I think those look really cool, but they’re also expensive. Satin tower for me. 100 double sleeved cards pack in there nice and tight, and it locks shut very securely. I love my Academic, either the one for two or one decks, for my favourites.

All the while, we’ll have half our deck at our disposal to answer our opponent’s attempts to halt us. At the tippy-top of the curve, there’s battlefield control in the form of Portal to Phyrexia, which will also start bringing back the best creature in a graveyard during each of your upkeeps. Casting big Eldrazi spells for no mana can be brutal, but I’d be most likely to run Kozilek, Butcher of Truth for the card-drawing power. Darksteel Colossus is another huge monster that’s difficult to deal with. Primal Prayers provides you with two extra energy, and it allows you to cast lower cost creatures at instant speed by paying energy.

Now that’s a bit mysterious, but given that this is a Jeskai precon, it’s most likely that there will be some of a prowess-like effect. Bear Umbra, Nature’s Will and Sword of Feast and Famine are solid choices for this. Slinza likes to fight, so we can lean into that synergy a little bit. Neyith of the Dire Hunt draws you a card each time one or more creatures you control fight or are blocked, and seems like another worthy non-Beast we may want to include. Contested Cliffs is a gem from Onslaught that lets a Beast of yours fight a creature your opponent controls.

This package is all about keeping our commander alive. These forms of protection are also non-creature spells, so it lets us make some tokens in the process too. Clout of Dominus is basically free at one mana as the spirit Kykar creates will be sufficient to recoup the cost of playing it. Misdirection, Narset’s Reversal, and Silence are all great ways of stopping our opponents’ interaction and allow us to have some peace and quiet to cast our spells. Protecting your commander and key creatures is crucial to maintaining your game plan. Protection spells can counter targeted removal, grant indestructible, or phase out your permanents, making them temporarily invulnerable.

This card is not needed for a functional Hashaton deck. Nevertheless, the impact of having this enchantment is huge. It makes combos that may finish any table on the spot like the one with [card]Astral Dragon, and duplicating the value of every Hashaton’s trigger is immense. Creatures that connive are great for triggering Hashaton without spending mana. It is not hard to think what two creatures are the best with this ability.

Since Realmwalker has changeling, it’s an honorary Beast and can help you “draw” cards by casting Beast cards from the top of your library. Altanak, the Thrice-Called can be discarded early to get back a land you’ve sacrificed earlier, or you can just wait and cast it after Slinza is on the battlefield to make a gigantic beatdown monster. For a few mana more you can have an even bigger beatdown monster with Titanoth Rex, or if you want to cycle it early for a fresh card you can. In addition to the Scarecrows, we might want to run a number of zero-mana artifact creatures that you can hold and cast once you’ve deployed your Rendmaw.

Commander Deck Spotlight: Legendary Builds for EDH

There are some exceptions, such as Partner commanders and planeswalkers that explicitly state they can be your Commander. They are crucial for accelerating your mana production, especially in decks that rely on expensive spells. Seeing as Kykar can make tokens, we should try to capitalize on them in other ways, not just sacrificing them for mana. This is a very broad category, and most of it isn’t just for tokens.

Since we can’t always determine everything in the draft stage of our deck, running 10 card draw spells is a great starting point as most Commander deck building templates will tell you. From there it’s a good idea to playtest and see how your deck performs (see this article for playtest ideas). If we find ourselves in a soul-crushing top-deck situation every game, it’s clear we need to adjust and start running more draw. Allie branches out of land ramp into a fair amount of creature-based ramp as well. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds has the potential of making a bunch of mana the bigger your X-spell creatures are, and she’ll draw an extra card here or there as well.

First, a quick reminder on the rules of deck building in Commander. A deck is made up of 99 unique cards (besides basic lands), and a 100th card that sits outside the game as your commander. All cards in your deck must fall within the same color identity as your commander. Our main objective for each game is to slap down a creature or equipment whose power reflects the overwhelming amount of cards in our hand and then swinging in for big damage. We’ll be able to take advantage of blue’s natural evasion to get around blockers and maybe even take out our pauper decks opponents in a single blow.
